The scene
House music in New York
New York’s story runs alongside Chicago’s. Larry Levan’s ten years at the Paradise Garage (1977–1987) gave the world the garage sound; Masters at Work, Todd Terry and Armand Van Helden built on it through the ’90s, with Kerri Chandler just across the river in New Jersey.
