The story
What is soulful house?
Soulful house comes from the New York and New Jersey garage tradition: the Paradise Garage, Larry Levan, and later Masters at Work and labels built around singers.
Vocalists like Ultra Naté, Crystal Waters and Barbara Tucker carried the sound, and it’s still the warm-up and the closing hour of many of the best parties.
How it sounds
- Full vocal songs, often gospel-rooted
- Live keys, strings and horns
- Swinging drums
