The story

What is progressive house?

Progressive house grew in early-1990s Britain: house music that builds slowly, layer by layer, made for long DJ sets. Sasha and John Digweed defined it at Renaissance and with their Northern Exposure mixes, and Nick Warren’s Way Out West took it worldwide.

Its descendants run through today’s melodic house. Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream parties are a good example of where that patience lives now.

How it sounds

  • Slow builds and breakdowns
  • Melodic, often minor-key layers
  • Long tracks made for blending
  • Usually about 122–128 BPM
